Connect your card reader

Plug in the USB smart card reader that came with your e-Residency kit.

Tip: The card reader works with USB-A. For newer laptops, you may need a USB-C adapter.

Install ID software

Download and install the Estonian ID software package (includes drivers and middleware).

Install DigiDoc4

DigiDoc4 is the application for creating and verifying digital signatures.

Enable Web eID browser extension

Web eID allows you to authenticate and sign in web browsers.

Tip: Supported browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Edge. Safari support is limited.

Insert your e-Residency card

Place your e-Residency card (chip side up) into the card reader.

Test authentication (PIN1)

Your PIN1 is used for authentication (logging in). Test it by visiting a government portal.

Tip: PIN1 has 3 attempts before lockout. Use PUK to unlock if needed.

Test digital signature (PIN2)

Your PIN2 is used for digital signatures. Test it by signing a document in DigiDoc4.

Tip: PIN2 also has 3 attempts. Keep your PUK code in a safe place.
