e-Residency for Freelancers
Why an Estonian company is the ideal setup for location-independent freelancers — and how to get started.
Why freelancers love e-Residency
If you're a freelancer billing international clients from different locations, you've probably struggled with the question: "Where should my company be?" An Estonian company solves this elegantly.
I've been a freelancer since 2012 and an e-Resident since 2015. Before Estonia, I dealt with German tax bureaucracy while living abroad, which was a nightmare. The Estonian company simplified everything: one clean entity, one set of books, invoicing clients worldwide without friction.
The typical freelancer setup
Here's what a working e-Residency setup looks like for a freelancer:
| Component | Choice | Monthly Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Service provider | Xolo Leap Starter | €59 |
| Business banking | Wise Business | Free (one-time ~€50 setup) |
| Invoicing | Through Xolo | Included |
| Accounting | Through Xolo | Included |
| VAT filing | Through Xolo | Included |
| Total | €59/month |
That's it. €59/month for a fully managed EU company with professional invoicing, automated bookkeeping, and quarterly tax filing. No local accountant, no tax advisor appointments, no paperwork. (If your volume outgrows the Starter tier, Xolo's Standard plan is €99/month.)
What freelancers actually need
Professional invoicing
Clients — especially corporate ones — want invoices from a real company, not a personal PayPal address. Your Estonian OÜ gives you:
- EU company name on invoices
- EU VAT number (when registered)
- Belgian IBAN via Wise
- Professional PDF invoices from your provider's platform
Multi-currency handling
US client pays in USD. German client pays in EUR. UK client pays in GBP. With Wise Business, you hold all currencies and convert at mid-market rates when needed. Your provider reconciles everything automatically.
Clean separation of finances
Business money stays in your Wise Business account. Personal money goes into your personal account when you distribute dividends. No mixing, no messy bookkeeping, no "was this dinner business or personal?" questions.
The cleanest setup: all income goes to Wise Business. All business expenses come from the Wise Business card. You pay yourself a quarterly dividend. Your personal life and business finances never touch each other.
The freelancer math
Is it worth it at your revenue?
| Monthly Revenue | Provider Cost | Effective Rate | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| €1,000 | €59 | 5.9% | Tight — build revenue first |
| €2,000 | €59 | 3.0% | Reasonable |
| €3,000 | €59 | 2.0% | Good value |
| €5,000 | €59 | 1.2% | Very good value |
| €10,000 | €99 (Standard) | 1.0% | No-brainer |
The break-even point for most freelancers is around €1,000-1,500/month — lower than it used to be, thanks to Xolo's €59 Starter tier. Below that, the percentage is high. Above that, it's a bargain for a fully managed EU company.
Common freelancer scenarios
Web developer, clients in US + EU
Setup: Xolo Leap Standard (€99) + Wise Business. Invoice US clients in USD, EU clients in EUR. Wise handles conversion. Xolo handles bookkeeping. Pay yourself quarterly dividends.
Marketing consultant, German clients
Setup: Xolo Leap Starter (€59) + Wise Business. If all your clients are in DACH and pay in EUR, the leanest setup works. Register for VAT when you hit €40k/year.
Designer, 2-3 retainer clients
Setup: Xolo Leap Starter (€59) + Wise Business. Set up recurring invoices in Xolo. Monthly invoices fire automatically. Transactions sync. You focus on design work, not admin.
Important for German freelancers who deregistered: If you left Germany (Abmeldung), your Estonian company becomes your primary business entity. Make sure your new country of residence recognizes this. Get tax advice specific to your new location + Estonian company combination.

FAQ for freelancers
Can I keep my existing clients? Yes. You just update your invoicing details to your new Estonian company. Most clients don't care where the invoice comes from — they care about the work.
Do I need to close my existing company? Depends on your situation. Some freelancers run both in parallel during a transition period. Consult your tax advisor.
Can I still use Upwork/Toptal/freelance platforms? Yes. You invoice the platform (or the client through the platform) from your Estonian company. Most platforms accept invoices from EU companies.
