The short answer

Xolo. For years the honest answer was "Xolo if you can afford it, Companio if you're on a budget" — but Xolo's pricing restructure flipped that. Xolo Leap Starter costs €59/month with no setup fee; Companio's entry plan (PRO) costs €89/month plus a €390 setup fee. Xolo is now both the more polished platform and the cheaper one.

Companio still makes sense if you specifically want Spanish-language support.

Both handle the fundamentals well. The difference is in polish, integrations, track record — and now price.

My Experience

I use Xolo (since 2017) and have no plans to switch. But I've talked to several people who use Companio and are perfectly happy with it. This isn't a "one is bad" comparison — it's about which trade-offs matter to you.

Pricing comparison

The table above shows current pricing from our database. Here's what's not immediately obvious:

Hidden costs to watch:

  • Annual report preparation: included in base plans for both, but Xolo charges extra for complex annual reports
  • VAT registration: both include it, but the process speed varies
  • Address change: free with both providers

Total cost in Year 1 (entry plans, ex VAT; state fees for company registration — €265 + €25 + VAT — come on top with both providers):

Xolo Leap StarterCompanio PRO
Setup€0 (no setup fee)€390
Monthly × 12€708€1,068
Total Year 1€708€1,458
Difference€750 cheaper

That €750 difference is real — and it now points at Xolo. Keep in mind that Starter is Xolo's leanest tier; if your business needs more (higher transaction volume, more support), the Standard plan at €99/month still lands you at €1,188 for year one — €270 below Companio's entry plan.

Feature-by-feature

Dashboard & UX

Xolo wins. Their dashboard is genuinely good — clean design, easy invoicing, real-time financial overview. It feels like a product built by people who use Notion and Linear.

Companio's interface is functional but simpler. It gets the job done without the polish.

Banking integration

Xolo wins. Wise, LHV, and Revolut integration. Transactions sync automatically. This is a huge time saver.

Companio integrates with Wise and LHV but the sync is less seamless.

Support

Tie. Both offer email support with typical 24-48h response times. Xolo's higher Leap tiers and Companio Premium include priority support.

Track record

Xolo wins. Larger team, more users, longer history. When regulations change or edge cases arise, Xolo's experience matters.

Companio is newer and smaller. They're growing, but they haven't been through as many Estonian tax law changes.

Warning

Track record matters more than you think. Estonian e-business regulations change regularly. A provider that's been through multiple annual report seasons and VAT rule changes will handle surprises better.

When to choose Xolo

  • You want the lowest entry price (€59/month, no setup fee)
  • You value a polished dashboard
  • You use Wise as your primary business bank
  • You want the longest track record

When to choose Companio

  • You want Spanish-language support and dashboard
  • You prefer their onboarding style and interface
  • You don't need Revolut integration
  • The €89/month + €390 setup pricing fits your budget anyway

My #1 Recommendation

Xolo

From €59/month

After 7+ years with Xolo, the dashboard and Wise integration are what keep me. It's not the cheapest, but it's the one I never have to think about.

Bottom line

If you asked me to recommend one provider without knowing anything about your situation, I'd say Xolo Leap — Starter if you're bootstrapping, Standard once you're established. It's the safe default, and since the pricing restructure it's also the cheap one. The old advice "start with Companio, upgrade to Xolo later" no longer survives contact with the price lists.

Companio is still a solid platform — if the Spanish-language support matters to you, you won't regret it. But you'd be paying more for it, not less.

Either way, you're in good hands. The e-Residency ecosystem has matured — there are no terrible options among the major providers.
